Classes

SFYCA participants spend 15-20 hours in specialized classes under the guidance of expert faculty.

Vocal Technique - daily sessions with Greg Douma

Vocal technique classes start off the day at SFYCA. Through different warm-ups and exercises the vocal instrument is prepared for another day of singing.

Musicianship - specialized classes taught by Matthew Svoboda

In SFYCA musicianship sessions participants study music theory, history and choral conducting technique to explore choral music from historical, analytical and interpretive perspectives. This process challenges the singers to make informed decisions about their music making and to form knowledgeable attitudes and perspectives concerning the choral art.

Movement - Therees Hibbard

The movement classes usually begin with breathing/relaxation exercises and some stretching. Dr. Hibbard encourages singers to be comfortable moving their bodies during movement class, so that they can apply this sensation while rehearsing and performing.

Rehearsals - Dr. Armstrong and Helmuth Rilling

Conductors guide Academy singers through 60 hours of rehearsal in 12 days, taking the group from sightreading new material to a full-length concert.
